Kevin Daniels

Kevin Daniels

Kevin Daniels, a firefighter in South Boston Virginia, suffered a severe brain stem injury in a violent auto accident while responding to a fire call. Tragically, Kevin lost much of his motor function. With limited treatment options in the US, Kevin traveled to Tijuana, Mexico just a few blocks over the California border, where he received an infusion of umbilical cord blood stem cells (UCBSC) on 09-25-06. The UCBSC are FDA approved, come from the United States, are collected after the birth of the baby, and are completely non-controversial. The results were so impressive that he traveled to Mexico again in November of 2008 and received a second infusion of UCBSCs. Since then he's seen incredible progress.

His spasticity medicine (Baclofen – given for uncontrolled muscle spasms) has been reduced by more than 90% (from 1000 micrograms/day to 80/day) and his speech has markedly improved. Prior to stem cell therapy, Kevin would most often sleep until 10-11am, and then have to sleep 4-5 hours per day. Kevin is now awake by 7-8 am every morning, stays awake until 11pm, and is more alert throughout the day. His bowels and other body functions are now back to normal. He is able to say whole sentences without pausing, can hold his breath for the first time in 10 years, and is able to transfer his weight easier to get in and out of bed. Kevin also has increased movement on his left side which he did not have before the umbilical cord stem cell infusions. They have made a huge difference.

Kevin is confident that if he could receive more UCBSC infusions, he would improve even more. When he receives his third treatment he hopes to be able to get rid of the Baclofen pump and possibly even learn to walk again. Kevin may become one of the first with his condition to make such a breakthrough in progress.

If you would like more information on Kevin or his story, you may contact South Boston Fire Department Chief Steve Phillips or Capt. Dwight Spangler at (434) 575-4292. You may also call Kevin's mother Patricia at (434) 575-1740. Patricia's phone will not receive phone calls from blocked or unknown callers without the caller saying their name first, so please give her time to answer if you call and have to go through this process.

Kevin and his family are attempting to raise $13,000 for his third treatment in Mexico. Kevin's medical bills exceed one million dollars to date and continue to grow every month. Much of this expense is due to the Baclofen pump which he hopes to get rid of after the next treatment.
